CPCSEA Registration
The animal house facility has been registered by CPCSEA and awarded the Registration No. 824/GO/bc/2004/CPCSEA. However, recently NIB has got permission from CPCSEA to provide laboratory animals to other CPCSEA registered institutes in the country and the registration number has been modified to 824/GO/RBiBt/S/04/CPCSEA ( Research and breeding in-house use and for trading purpose)

Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC)
All the experiments involving animals are approved by the IAEC which is constituted by CPCSEA. The IAEC meetings are held regularly to obtain ethical clearance for use of animals in QC testing. The facility maintains all relevant records to ensure compliance to the approvals granted by the committee and progress under each approved protocol is put up for review by IAEC regularly in each meeting.

Infrastructural Facilities
The Animal Facility of NIB is a state of art designed by National Institute of Health, USA and has a total area of 4700 sq meter with approx 1200 sq meter on each floor and additional support area of 1100 sq meter on ground floor. The animal rooms occupy about 50-60 % of the total area. 10-12% each is for washing area and storage. Quarantine and corridors occupies 12-15% area whereas 4-5% is for utilities
The ground floor of animal facility has a hospital room well equipped with surgical table, designated quarantine rooms and sick bays for housed animals. Separate receiving and storage areas have been designed for dry and fresh feed, bedding material and storage of cages and racks. Cold room (2-8^oC) has been provided for storage of carcass of dead animals and animal tissue waste. The washing of all cages and accessories is done by automated cage and rack washers and tunnel washer and sterlization by autoclaves equipped with microprocessor control system. In addition ground floor has staff room, locker rooms, showers and toilets for the animal care staff.
First floor has rooms designated for holding experimental animals of different species i.e mice, rat, guinea pig and rabbit as well as for holding animals for different experiments. In addition there are 3 BSL-II level procedure rooms where all the experimental procedures are performed on the animals.
The Second floor of the animal facility has been designated for breeding and has well designated breeding rooms for different strains of rats and mice, guinea pigs and rabbits.

Environment

The animals are being maintained under controlled environmental conditions as specified in CPCSEA guidelines with temperature maintained between 22-25-2^oC, relative humidity between 45-65 %, timer controlled 12:12 hr light dark cycle and 12-15 air changes per hour with 100% fresh air.

National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) Accreditation of Biological Tests

Animal Facility participated in the NABL audit for ISO 17025 in 2010 and got accreditation for in-vivo biological tests being performed in the facility at that time and thereafter participates in the annual Surveillance-cum scope extension audit conducted by NABL.

Providing Laboratory Animals to other CPCSEA Registered Institutes

The Animal Facility of National Institute of Biologicals (NIB) has recently got permission from CPCSEA to provide laboratory animals to other CPCSEA registered institutes in the country and the registration number of the facility has now been modified to 824/GO/RBiBt/S/04/CPCSEA ( Research and breeding in-house use and for trading purpose).

The animals will be provided to other institutes subject to the condition that they provide the following documents.
    a) Copy of the CPCSEA registration certificate of the institute/establishment with details of period of registration.     
    b) Copy of Institutional Animal Ethics Committee approval certificate against which animals are being procured clearly specifying the
        . Title of protocol
        . Protocol number
        . Specie/Strain of animals approved by IAEC
        . Number of animals approved
        . Age / weight and sex of animals approved
        . Date of approval and validity period of the ethical approval
    c) Proof of advance payment made to NIB

      . Animals can be collected on any working day between 10 A.M to 4.00 P.M. i.e. Monday to Friday except holidays only after confirmation from NIB about the availability of animals and date of collection
      . The purchasers have to make their own arrangement for collection and transportation of animals as per CPCSEA guidelines
      . NIB will not be responsible for any incident like mortality, injury or escape of supplied animals once they leave our facility
      . The payment has to be made in advance by
