NEED OF HAEMOVIGILANCE IN INDIA

Haemovigilance is required to identify and prevent occurrence or recurrence of transfusion related unwanted events, to increase the safety, efficacy and efficiency of blood transfusion, covering all activities of the transfusion chain from donor to recipient.

Safe blood screening test a far cry

Orissa, 20 Jul 2012:19:54 IST A PIL has been filed in the Orissa high court seeking a direction to the state government to introduce modern method of blood testing for HIV virus in all blood banks replacing the old system that had been found not yielding the desired results. The petitioner cited a recent case of a woman being detected HIV positive six months after she was given blood transfusion.

Woman dies of wrong blood transfusion, Delhi Govt. asked to pay compensation

NHRC notice to government in blood transfusion case

Guwahati, 26 June 2013: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suomotucognizance of the recent incident of transfusion of HIV+ blood at the Mangaldoi Civil Hospital in Darrang district, which infected at least four persons, and sent a notice to the state government. Accordingly, a notice has been issued to the chief secretary and the state government to furnish a detailed report on the matter within four weeks.

Patients get HIV in Assam hospital after blood transfusion, panic spread

Assam, 14 June 2013: On World Blood Donor Day patient was found to be HIV positive after blood transfusion. When he was admitted in the hospital in September 2012 for melena (a form of stomach ulcer) and needed blood transfusion. The blood was arranged by the blood bank of the hospital. While the Assam State HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Policy strives “to ensure prevention of hospital acquired infections for a safe environment, [and] to strengthen safe blood transfusion system both at the government and private institutions”, the reality seems starkly different
