Vaccine & Antisera Laboratory




Vaccine Laboratory has been established to ensure that the vaccines produced, distributed and imported into the country are safe, efficacious and potent with the mandate to evaluate and ensure the quality of Biologicals referred to it.

To develop linkage with other national/international institution and keep abreast with worldwide scientific research and technological developments in production and quality control of vaccine with a view to advising on the suitability of their adoption.

To develop technical guidelines/ manuals on standards to be used by manufacturers and to undertake research on various immunobiologicals using multidisciplinary integrated approach.
Providing training facilities in quality control testing of vaccines for personnel of related institutions including testing and manufacturing units and six month dissertation project for post graduate students (M.Sc &B.Tech) of various universities is also formed as an indispensable part of its activities.

Vaccine & Antisera Laboratory is notified as CDL for the BCG Vaccine, Cell Culture Rabies Vaccine, Live attenuated Measles Vaccine, Live Attenuated Rubella Vaccine. (Ref. Gazette Notification No: G.S.R. 250 (E) - Part-II - Section 3 - Sub-Section (i) dated 15.03.2017) and Oral Polio Vaccine (Ref. Gazette Notification No: G.S.R. 249 (E), dated: 04.04.2002).

Lab has taken up collaborative studies such as inclusion of WHO protocol for Determination of PRP content of Hib (Haemophilus Influenzae type b) in liquid vaccine presentations by HPAEC-PAD in Indian Pharmacopoeia. The purpose of such study was to optimize the protocol for final validation studies and bringing the stakeholders on common consensus for final inclusion of WHO protocol in Indian Pharmacopoeia.
